Amboseli National Park: Elephants Under Kilimanjaro

Amboseli: Africa's Most Iconic Landscape

Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya delivers what is arguably the most iconic image in all of African wildlife photography: a herd of African elephants moving across a dusty plain with the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro rising 5,895 metres behind them. It is a sight of almost impossible beauty — and it is real, visible on a clear morning from virtually anywhere in the park. Amboseli is compact (392 km²), wildlife-rich, and one of the best half-day drives from Nairobi for those with limited time.

Amboseli's Famous Elephant Population

Amboseli is home to one of Africa's most studied and most relaxed elephant populations. The Amboseli Elephant Research Project has been monitoring family groups here since 1972 — the longest continuous study of wild elephants in the world. As a result, Amboseli's elephants are exceptionally habituated to vehicles, allowing the most extraordinary close encounters. Large-tusked bulls are regularly photographed here.

Wildlife Beyond Elephants

Amboseli's swamps — fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro's snowmelt — attract hippo, Cape buffalo, and an extraordinary diversity of waterbirds including African spoonbill, saddle-billed stork, and crowned crane. Lion, cheetah, and hyena are present, and Amboseli is a key stronghold for the endangered Masai giraffe.

Combining Amboseli with Kilimanjaro or Tanzania

Amboseli sits on the Kenya-Tanzania border, making it a natural companion to a Kilimanjaro trek or Northern Tanzania safari. A popular itinerary runs: Nairobi → Amboseli (2 nights) → Moshi (Kilimanjaro trek) → Arusha (Northern Circuit safari) → Zanzibar.
