Safari Straight from the City: Nairobi's Wildlife Surprises
Nairobi is the only capital city in the world with a national park on its doorstep — and it is not the only wildlife encounter available within an hour of the city centre. Whether you have a single layover day or are building a longer Nairobi stopover into your Kenya–Tanzania itinerary, the Nairobi region offers a surprisingly rich selection of wildlife and nature experiences that should not be overlooked.
Nairobi National Park
Just 7 km from the Nairobi CBD, Nairobi National Park is one of Kenya's best-kept safari secrets. It protects 117 km² of savanna, forest, and river forest — home to lion, cheetah, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, over 400 bird species, and Kenya's largest population of black rhino. The Nairobi skyline visible above the treeline provides one of Africa's most surreal safari backdrops. A 4-hour morning game drive can be organised from virtually any Nairobi hotel.
The Giraffe Centre
The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife's Giraffe Centre in Langata is one of Nairobi's most beloved attractions — a conservation breeding programme for the endangered Rothschild's giraffe where visitors can hand-feed giraffes from an elevated platform at eye level. A charming, photogenic, and genuinely impactful conservation experience. Allow 1–2 hours. Highly recommended for families.
David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
Adjacent to Nairobi National Park, the DSWT operates the world's most successful elephant orphan rescue and rehabilitation programme. A daily 11am public visit allows guests to watch baby orphaned elephants at their mud bath — one of the most heartwarming wildlife encounters in all of Africa. Visits must be pre-booked online.
Day Trip to Amboseli
For those with a full day in Nairobi, a day trip to Amboseli National Park (4 hours south near the Tanzania border) is technically possible but tiring. A 2-night stay is strongly recommended to experience Amboseli properly — particularly for early morning game drives beneath Kilimanjaro.
