Best Time to Visit Zanzibar: Month-by-Month Weather Guide

Zanzibar's Climate: What to Expect

Zanzibar enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures (25–32°C) year-round. The key variables affecting your visit are the two monsoon seasons — the long rains (Masika, April–May) and the short rains (Vuli, November) — and the wind patterns that affect beach conditions on different coasts. Here is a month-by-month guide to help you plan the perfect Zanzibar holiday.

The Best Months to Visit: June–October & December–February

June–October (South-East Monsoon — Kusi): The dry, cooler season. Ideal for beach holidays on the northern and western coasts (Nungwi, Kendwa, Stone Town). The east coast beaches (Paje, Jambiani) can be windy — perfect for kitesurfers, but rougher for swimming. Excellent snorkelling conditions at Mnemba Atoll.

December–February: The hottest and most popular beach season. Clear skies, warm water, and perfect conditions on both east and north coasts. This is the peak season — book well in advance.

Months to Approach with Care

April–May (Long Rains): Significant rainfall, high humidity, and some beach closures. Many higher-end properties close for renovation. Not recommended unless you are seeking very low prices and don't mind rain. Some roads can flood.

November (Short Rains): Short but intense daily showers, usually clearing by afternoon. Still entirely manageable — prices are lower and the island is lush and green. A good value period for experienced travellers.

Combining Zanzibar with a Tanzania Safari

The best months for a combined Tanzania safari + Zanzibar holiday are July–September (Serengeti river crossings + good Zanzibar north coast beach weather) and January–February (calving season safari + peak Zanzibar beach season). Both combinations offer exceptional quality across both experiences.
